For the assessment 2, Albert and me are work on editing, and Bronte and Caroline are work on writing script. Bronte and Caroline review the footages and make some notes on it and according those footage and interviews to write the script. After they finished the script we can work on editing. But the fact is we are work on editing when they done the structure about the script. But there are some problems come out, for instance some content or part about the script is too much but we do not have enough B-rolls or interviews to support it. Another problem is when we follow the script to editing, we find that some parts is hard to communicate them together, it is not too link to each other. And then Albert and me were according the script and the footages to think about how to communicate them together. So that we find we can separate the video to five part, they are history, house, wedding, daily life after marriage and regret. Then we call to Bronte and Caroline and told them about this plan. After the meeting, we all agree with it and decided change to this plan. Albert and me still work on editing part, Bronte and Caroline according to this plan to change their script.

Post-production – 1

In the post-production, we have to pay more effort on sound. Our interviews’ sound is not so good, and there are a lot of noises inside like people’s talk or footstep and ambience sound. This is why we have to use Adobe Audition to figure out this problem. I use Google to do some research about how to use Adobe Audition to reduce the noise and there are some tutorial for it. Firstly, we need chose the audio and send to Adobe Audition, and chose a few part that only have noise not people’s voice. And use “Capture Noise Print” which is behind “Effects” – “Noise Reduction/Restoration”, this step is to tell the program which one is noise. Secondly, we chose the whole audio and use “Noise Reduction (process)” which is behind “Effects” – “Noise Reduction/Restoration”, and then it will show a new window, and change the “Noise Reduction” to 80% and click “Apply”. Then you can hear the audio that reduces the noise. This is only work in Adobe Audition, but in the Adobe Premiere the audio is not replaced. Therefore, the final step is save the audio file and put this file in Adobe Premiere and replaces the old one audio. By using this way, the ambience sound was reduced the noise and the interviews’ voice is clearer.

Production-1

We stay in George Town for five days, in the museum we shot B-rolls about clothes, shoes, house and their daily life. Also we shot four people’s interview in George Town. After the meeting, we decided to shot a hyper-lapse like walk through the street to museum, and this video can be put at the beginning. In the first day, we try to shot the hyper-lapse. At the beginning we capture one picture by move one step, then we find it is really slow and we need to spend a long time on it. Then we change to move two steps to capture one picture. When we back to the hotel, connect the camera to laptop, the hyper-lapse will suddenly speed up and it is too shake. Therefore, I start to doing some research about how to shot hyper-lapse on Internet. After the research, I find that we need always keep in same speed, for instance keep one step or two steps and do not change it when shooting. Also we need keep the main object always stay in the center of the screen which can make the video not too shake. After done the research, I told to Albert and discuss how to shot the hyper-lapse for next day. This time it has really good change than before.

Because George Town is our first place for shooting, at the beginning when we are film in museum, every scenes Albert will ask me how to set the camera and I will come to help him and the setting for him, after few times he can does it by himself and the quality is really good.

Pre-production

After last semester course, I chose to work with Bronte and Caroline’s group on the topic of Peranakan culture. Also I joined Albert’s group on the topic of who artists struggle with their life. For the most work of pre-production like doing research, contact with people or organization and making schedule, I did not attend because last semester I work on my own project but finally I change to their group.

After I chose to work with them, we already met a lot of times. We chose the time to filming and buy the fight ticket for two projects. Before we start to film, we already have decided everyone’s role for the two projects. For the two projects, my role is cameraman and director. Because I study media when I am bachelor, therefore, I already have some experiences before. In this situation, I already negotiation with two projects’ producer Albert and Bronte about the problems that we might face when filming and what we need prepare before we go.

For the pre-production work, I just make a few contributions on it, but I give them a lot of advice for production work. It is very useful and important when we move to production work.

Task 3: investigate digital tools

In this task, I chose option 2 as my project.

Option 2. Create a 3-part branching video (a video that branches to two more videos) using Youtube or Interlude Treehouse. Post it on your personal blog.

Task 5: audience analysis

Answer these six questions in relation to the audience for your digital narrative:

Why are you creating this story? Goals, rationale, purpose, premise? What do you want your audience to experience or understand?

This project is about the Peranakan culture in terms of their history, house, food, traditional attire and wedding. The purpose of the project is to help preserve the Peranakan culture, which is slowly fading away with time. In order to do so, it is important to educate people about the culture, let them understand and spread it to others.

 

What is your story? In what way will it be original, surprising, human, passionate, truthful or relevant to your audience?

Our story is about introducing Peranakan culture, and we will present traditional Peranakan culture from five different aspects like history, house, traditional attire, food and wedding. It will be original, human and truthful because these documentaries will be relevant with the real life and real culture.

 

Where will you publish your story? What platform/s and hardware are suited to your audience? E-books, blogs, videos, photos, podcasts, tweets, status updates, apps, games, forums, websites?

We will set up a website to provide viewers with browsing, this website can be viewed on mobile devices as well as computers. On the website, there are five documentary to introduce Peranakan culture in different ways. Also there will be text and photographs to accompany each section on the website. On the other hand, we will post our documentaries on YouTube, and embedded into the website that will provide more information on the culture.

 

Who is your audience? Who is your target viewer/user – i.e. the group you will target in promoting the work?

This documentary is targeted towards young peranakans between the ages of 15 to 35 as well as those who are interested in the peranakan culture.

 

When will you create the content and start to engage your audience? What is the production process and publishing schedule?

We will create the content by doing research and interview them, with the content in documentary we will know more Peranakan culture from them, and we can through the editing to present a good story to audiences. We will shoot documentary and photograph during 20 Jun to 1 July in Malaysia. In the next semester, we will work on editing, writing and website built.

 

How will your audience participate in the narrative? Will they be able to contribute to the narrative, alter the narrative, respond to the narrative?

The audience will be able to respond to the narrative because they can view our website and leave comments on website and YouTube. People can share their experiences or opinion on it, and discuss with other audiences.

 

Task 2: write a digital narrative outline

Narrative outline: this narrative video will start at Melbourne Centre tram station, the girl Maggie standing front of station and playing the phone and look around, she already stand here more than 20 minutes and she is really very impatient. And then there is a boy Sean running to her, she getting very angry with him and has argue with him. He explains to her that he has the meeting with his study group and didn’t see the message, and he feeling so sorry about her. But Maggie still thinks that he is not love she like before, and then she crying and ran on the No.35 tram.

With the running of the tram, Maggie sat by the window and looked at the scenery outside. It will present the city’s view in Melbourne. And then the tram arrived at Dockland station, and she is going to get off the tram here. In this point, it will show two options, “Melbourne Star Observation Wheel” and “Victoria Harbour”, when viewers click one of them it will jump to this place. For the “Melbourne Star Observation Wheel” option, it will show the view of her and then it will come out two options can be chose, “bad memory” or “good memory”. If viewers choose “bad memory”, it will change to another video, it is about Maggie carried a lot of things and walking on the street, suddenly the high heels off and feet twisted, therefor she can not move at that moment. This time she called her boyfriend, but he is not answered, She guessed her boyfriend certainly play the game so he did not answer the phone. And then she suddenly felt wronged, and sat down and cried. If viewers choose “good memory”, it is about Maggie and Sean is sitting on the Melbourne Star, and Maggie lying on the glass watching the scenery outside. Sean gives her surprise that wearing a necklace to her and singing happy birthday song to her. After the video, the screen will show the title about “Do you want to go Victoria Harbour”, and viewers can choose “Yes” or “No”. If viewers click “No”, she will back to the No.35 tram and going another place. If viewers want to go Victoria Harbour, in this place it will still has two options, one is “Memory” and it will show that they are watching the firework together at the last day of last year. Another one is “siting down here and relax”, for this video, it will use first perspective to shoot the view of this place.

After this place, Maggie will back to No.35 tram and get off at next place “Flinders Street Station”, and there are four options can choose, “Flinders Street Station”, “St Paul’s Cathedral”, “Federation Square” and “Hosier Lane”. After each place viewers choose, it will shows other place can be choose or just go away and back to tram. In “Flinders Street Station”, it is real time video shows that she just stood at crossroads in front of the station, and there are so many people coming and going. In “St Paul’s Cathedral”, she will go in side and sat in the seat and listened to the choir. In “Federation Square”, the screen will present the view first and then highlight a seat. It will show “memory” here and viewers can choose see it or not. The memory is about Maggie was playing mobile game, turned her head to Sean but not watching him, waiting for Sean feed her ice cream. But what the coming is not ice cream is his kiss. In “Hosier Lane”, when she saw the graffiti, she thought of last time she look at the Running Man, and it shows funny clips shooting here.

For the final station “Melbourne Centre”, when she get off the tram she saw that her boyfriend Sean standing across the street and keep smiling at her, at the same time, the background view is State Library of Victoria.
